The Veterans and Virgins stage is here for you and it’s brimming with goodness

The Veterans and Virgins stage is here for you and it’s brimming with goodness

Friday is Virgins day, for up-and-coming local talents and artists new to Truck’s field of dreams, kicking off with 7 brilliant and diverse acts chosen by BBC Oxford Introducing. Lucy Mair is a young & talented singer-songwriter drawing comparisons to Soak & early Amy Winehouse, Be Good sing Wainwright-esque torch songs with a hint of doo-wop, while former Ute/Salvation Bill stalwarts Kancho! bring 2-piece punk-hardcore rawk. Homeplanetearth play dark grunge pop with a hint of new romanticism,  Neverlnd have developed from their earlier Ballon Ascents incarnation into a really clever intricate pop band and there’s off-kilter art-rock from Lucy Leave, and stadium-ready guitar anthems from Leader. Maiians reprise their live electronica spectacle for a possible farewell show ;-( while Lewis & Leigh bring heart-rending songs & gorgeous boy/girl harmonies. The folk & blues-rock grooves of Marc Riley/Guy Garvey favourites Hot Feet close out an amazing day 1.

On Saturday we bring you Veterans of Trucks gone by. A pair of veritable indie (as in, independent) legends head the bill on Saturday, ace storyteller and inventor of extraordinary musical contraptions Thomas Truax, and underground poet, songwriter and social commentator Chris T-T, who unlike most bands these days is not afraid to actually SAY something.

Co-pilgrim return with their alt-rock meets lush 70s harmony-pop; none-more-English piano singer Luke Smith & the Feelings always thrills the Truck crowd with his vignettes on the quirks of Canterbury life, and Flights of Helios make gorgeous psychedelic ambient pop.  Alphabet Backwards always get the crowd moving with their brand of catchy synth-pop, erstwhile Smilex frontman and all-round showman Lee Christian brings his eclectic pop troupe the Prohibition Smokers Club, and easing us out of our Saturday morning haze will be perfectly-crafted jangle-pop from Jami Hyatt & co’s Family Machine. Phew! We can’t wait..

Sunday see’s a brand new addition to the V&V stage, we have teamed up with lovely people of The Bullingdon, Oxford’s leading independent music venue with the greatest cocktail bar in town, to bring you a whole host of music to the Sunday of Truck!

Hampshire’s own energetic-fuzztrio Blaenavon will be joined by the gloomy young romantics INHEAVEN, the angry and Glaswegian punk three-piece Baby Strange, the unstoppable indie rockers Haus and the hottest band around at the moment Abattoir Blues.

The Bullingdon takeover will also play host to some of the best local talent around, hand-picked and voted for via our Band App! Inner Peace Records, Haze, Too Many Poets and Palm Honey will all bringing the party to the Veterans and Virgins stage!

We’re good to you aren’t we?

Lots of Love

we only went and did an AQA with REN

We did an AQA with REN who designed our Truck illustrations and characters. He’s pretty awesome…

We’ve had a lot of people getting in touch wanting to know more about the awesome dude who made Truck’s new look. He is a really talented illustrator who designed all of Trucks characters. Well we only went and did an AQA with REN so you could get to know him a little better.

We sent our bro for life Suzy Moosa (she has over 25,000 followers – #bigdealontwitter) over to have a word with Ren (Jack Reynolds)… here’s what happened.

So you did the branding for Truck but have you ever been before? If so then what were your thoughts?

Shamefully I have never been before, but I have a few friends that go every year so I know the vibe, I’ll obviously be there this year though.

Where do you take inspiration for your artwork? Especially with Truck (The yellow man is 100% my fave)
I take inspiration from things that happen during everyday life. With the Truck piece I just listened to a bunch of bands and drew what ever came into my head. The yellow man is one of my ‘Bear’ characters who is actually based on my partner, I had to chuck him in there somewhere.

How did you get into illustration?

I guess you could say I’ve been illustrating all of my life, but I only really started to home in on my craft during university. I actually work as an Art Director for a creative agency and my illustrative work has now become more like a hobby that I love and get paid for.

How did you end up working with So Young?

Myself along with Josh and Sam (So Young) have all been friends since ‘reception’ (first year of school) and have maintained similar interests, specially when being creative so it was a natural progression. I’ve been the zines biggest fan since its inception and my excitement for it seems to grow with every issue.

Best gig you’ve ever been to and why?

This is a tricky question. There’s been quite a few stand out nights and quite a lot that will only remain as a blurry memory drenched in vodka. The first time I saw Drenge is definitely up there, the size of the crowd and overall vibe was a perfect blend.

Which artists are you most looking forward to seeing this summer?

This doesn’t really answer your question but… I’m really looking forward to Truck in general. The So Young stage is going to be something to remember, and it definitely marks a milestone for my self and So Young, with me doing the branding for the festival and them hosting their own stage.

I did a cheeky Twitter stalk on your profile and found your 25th birthday cake (what a treat, I’m super jealous) and I’m just curious to know who your favourite [Ru Paul obvs] drag queen is?

HAHA, my twitter game is so weak! That was and still remains the best birthday cake I have ever received. My birthday fell like a month after I came out and my sisters surprised me with it, true acceptance! I could talk about the girls forever but I’m going to base this question on the current series and say Bob The Drag queen.

If you could work with any band who would it be?

I don’t really have a wish list of bands that I would like to work with. As long as they are cool and we understand each other to the point where they really get me and allow me to have creative control… That’s who I want to work with.

Who are you listening to at the moment?

I listen to a really broad range of music so it changes by the hour, but I can’t wait for Skepta’s new album to come out!

I have to ask as its become a bit of a running joke within interviews, but what is your favorite cheese?

Im no that heavily in to dairy so my cheese range isn’t that vast. I would have to go with either grilled Halloumi or a mature melted Cheddar. I went through a phase of buying Mexicana when I was hungover and now I can’t stand the sight/smell of it.

So there you have it! Now you know a bit more about the Truck characters. If you want to have a look at more of REN’s stuff – why wouldn’t you want to! – you head here
